Vegetal is a chair shaped with organic curves and is intended to look as if it was shaped naturally. With this goal in mind, French designers Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec designed Vegetal, inspired by the way American gardeners give small trees the shape of seating furniture.
Designed for outdoor use, the chair had to be both water-resistant and easily stackable for practical purposes; neither the Bouroullec brothers nor Vitra could have anticipated that the ambitious project would take four years of intensive work on design and development before realization. The inspiration of natural plants can be easily seen in the complex, non-symmetrical structure and color scheme of the branch-like ribs that make up Vegetal’s seat shell. Made from polyamide material and manufactured using injection molding, the chair explores the limits of the material and the latest production techniques.
