Ole Wanscher

Born in Copenhagen in 1903, architect Ole Wanscher was also a professor of architecture with an expertise in furniture design. He became one of the people to shape the world of Danish furniture design both as an active designer and as a skilled teacher. His sophisticated and functional designs with a focus on details are regarded as “modern classics” in Denmark.
Construction and form were very important for Ole Wanscher to approach furniture design as a branch of architecture. He studied under Kaare Klint at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and worked for Klint between 1924 and 1927 before becoming an independent architect with an expertise in furniture design. He then followed the footsteps of Kliny and became a masterful professor of furniture design at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts.
In later years, Ole Wanscher traveled to Egypt and around Europe to study furniture design. He internalized his impressions of these countries, was inspired by them and blended them with his design style. The designer wrote various books including “The Art Of Furniture: 5000 Years of Furniture Interiors.”
