Having studied mechanical engineering and design at the Iowa State University, Richard Schultz joined Knoll in 1951. With the Petal chair he designed in 1960, he was presented with an award by the magazine Industrial Design. After Florence Knoll moved to a summerhouse in Florida, she realized some furniture was not durable for the city’s climate, upon which
Schultz created the aluminum Leisure collection in 1966. The collection is still a leading representative of modern open-air furniture.
