Born in St. Louis in 1907, Charles Eames studied architecture at the University of Washington. After graduation, he built many partnerships and designed houses and churches. His works caught the attention of architect Eero Saarinen and the two received an award in 1940 for a collaborative project.
Ray Eames was born under the name Alexandra Kaiser in California in 1912. She studied at Bennett College and later at Hans Hofmann School of Fine Arts. Charles and Ray Eames married in 1941, moved to Los Angeles and started working together. The couple had a deep and lasting effect on Vitra. What left a mark on Vitra was not just Charles and Ray Eames’ products. The couple’s design philosophy still continues to significantly shape the company’s values, direction and goals.
